SHADOWS of Scribbles Shadows are vague, incomprehensible, unclear. I’ll try to find some sense and reason until truth emerges, along with hidden gems of wisdom and clarity. Hopefully, these shadows become tame for us to recognize and understand.
UP CLOSE and Personal
MY TIMELINE… Just a simple visual presentation of how it had been…
Aha, now I know you’re a bona fide southpaw, and therefore, your brain is arranged differently from the rest of us, average normal folks. YOU HAVE THIS ADVANTAGE ALL ALONG FROM THE VERY BEGINNING…
Yup. But there exists a body of studies to suggest that your being left-handed actually endows you with certain advantages. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-handed), for instance, cites the following re left-handedness and intelligence: “Some studies argue a correlation between left-handedness and creativity/intelligence.
“In his book Right-Hand, Left-Hand, Chris McManus of University College London, argues that the proportion of left-handers is rising and left-handed people as a group have historically produced an above-average quota of high achievers. He says that left-handers’ brains are structured differently in a way that widens their range of abilities, and the genes that determine left-handedness also govern development of the language centers of the brain.
“McManus also says that the increase in the 20th century of people identifying as left-handed could produce a corresponding intellectual advance and a leap in the number of mathematical, sporting, or artistic geniuses.”
The Wiki article goes on to mention studies about how handedness affect human thinking: “There are many theories on how being left-handed affects the way a person thinks. One theory divides left- and right-handed thinkers into two camps: visual simultaneous vs. linear sequential.
“According to this theory, right-handed people are thought to process information using a “linear sequential” method in which one thread must complete its processing before the next thread can be started.
“Left-handed persons are thought to process information using a “visual simultaneous” method in which several threads can be processed simultaneously. Another way to view this is such: Suppose there were one thousand pieces of popcorn and one of them was colored blue. Right-handed people—using the linear sequential processing style—would look at the popcorn one at a time until they encountered the blue one. The left-handed person would spread out the pieces of popcorn and look at all of them to find the one that was blue. A side effect of these differing styles of processing is that right-handers need to complete one task before they can start the next. Left-handers, by contrast, are capable and comfortable switching between tasks. This seems to suggest that left-handed people have an excellent ability to multi-task, and anecdotal evidence suggests that there are more creative stems due to this ability to multi-task.
“Right-handed people process information using “analysis”, which is the method of solving a problem by breaking it down to its pieces and analyzing the pieces one at a time. By contrast, left-handed people process information using “synthesis”, which is the method of solving a problem by looking at the whole and trying to use pattern-matching to solve the problem.
“The hypothesis that left-handed people are predisposed to visual-based thought has been validated by a variety of evidence. In the 2004 book Brains That Work a Little Bit Differently, researchers Allen D. Bragdon and David Gamon, Ph.D., briefly described some of the current research on handedness and its significance. “Handedness researchers Coren and Clare Porac have shown that left-handed university students are more likely to major in visually-based, as opposed to language-based subjects.”
Girl, that’s heavy! Everything, except I’m right-handed but I would NEVER look at the popcorn one at a time until I encountered the blue one… and I’m not even ambidextrous! Multi-tasking? Chewing gum and walking at the same time don’t count, do they?
Manong Joe, WOW… hehehe! It is no longer Pacquiao only. it’s more on the heavyweights division now…
Let me see…
Okay. I write using my left hand (although I can do it with my right hand, courtesy of the nuns in school who painstakingly tried to make me do it the other way…), and do most things using my left hand by default…
If, let’s say I am a right-handed person… I can argue that I can acquire intelligence by serious learning…, I can develop creative ideas by extensive research, and practice… okay… maybe it’s a lot easier to do by left-handed people.
…now there goes the “language” stuff… in my case, I need to catch up with technical writing stuff…hehehe!
Okay, no kidding anymore manong Joe… on the “visual simultaneous” and “multi-tasking” stuff… yeah, I think that happens to some… me, as a left-handed person tend to try to do many things simultaneously, but no… more on a “multi-task” mode… What happens it that my energy drains like being sucked up by a lightning? Tsk tsk tsk… And you know how good I am in
being negligent with specific details especially editing hehehe! Good thing I got a “very patient Angel” over here.
Okay, this is for real, Manong Joe… MANY THANKS! THIS IS VERY GOOD STUFF. Thanks for sharing the info… Hmmm… I suppose it would nice to ask the guys if they are left-handed or not, JOKE!
Well, I think it’s obvious; I am enjoying the weekend.
Not to mention “World Vision” as in “visual simultaneous…”
